On November 16, 1938, the All-Union Committee for Physical Culture and Sports under the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR issued the order "On the Development of Freestyle Wrestling." This document officially recognized sambo as a sport and included it in the training system for Soviet athletes.
The holiday itself, Sambo Day, was established in 2008 on the initiative of Vasily Shestakov, President of the International Sambo Federation (FIAS), and has been celebrated annually since then.

Sambo is, at its core, an international and universal sport, incorporating the best of the many national martial arts of the peoples of the USSR. Anatoly Kharlampiev, Viktor Spiridonov, and Vasily Oshchepkov, who accomplished a colossal job of collecting and systematizing techniques, are rightfully considered the founders of Sambo.
Sambo Philosophy based on:
- Self-defense.The main goal is to learn to protect yourself and your loved ones without using weapons.
- Education of the spirit.Sambo develops willpower, discipline, resilience and respect for the opponent.
- Physical development.The training system develops all muscle groups, coordination, endurance and reaction.
There are two main directions of Sambo:
- Sambo wrestling (sport).Aimed at demonstrating throwing and wrestling techniques.
- Combat sambo.In addition to wrestling techniques, it includes striking techniques and defense against armed opponents. It was originally developed for law enforcement agencies.
A key milestone in the history of Sambo was its recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In 2018, Sambo received provisional recognition, and in 2023, full recognition. This paved the way for the potential inclusion of Sambo in future Olympic Games, a dream dreamed of by millions of athletes and fans worldwide.
Sambo is actively developing in more than 100 countries around the world, from South America to Asia, with world and European championships held and children's and youth sambo developing.
Sambo is a living symbol of the continuity of generations. Children and adults, men and women, practicing Sambo not only learn to defend themselves but also gain experience in dignified behavior based on the values of patriotism and civic responsibility. Sambo fosters self-discipline, builds an inner moral foundation, and develops a strong personal stance in achieving life's goals.

Sambo's birthday is a celebration, first and foremost, for children. It's meant to help them understand and love this wonderful sport, and embrace its spirit and philosophy. In Sambo schools, clubs, and sections across many countries, coaches do a great deal to help today's boys and girls grow into healthy, strong athletes.
